Daisy at LIVE Squamish

During the Labour Day weekend (Sept 4th and 5th), eatART will be taking Daisy, the solar powered tricycle to the people of LIVE at Squamish. Over 40 bands will be playing over 2 days on 3 stages.

Want to attend LIVE at Squamish for free?
eatART is in need of dedicated volunteers for the Daisy Crew. Daisy will be a stationary art icon, most likely near the main stage. (ps - she makes for an awesome viewing platform for a select few of us VIP's)  Duties will be light but critical, consisting of changing batteries, charging batteries, on-the-day liasons with festival organisers, periodic checking on Daisy's safety, etc. Only responsible applicants need apply. Electrical knowledge a plus.

EDIT 23 AUG 2010 - APPLICATIONS HAVE NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU

Powering Car Free Day

Solar panels deployed at 31st and Main.

On June 20th 2010 eatART deployed our brand new Day 4 Energy Solar Panels at Car Free Day on Main st. We powered two stages which were playing fantastic local musicians all day. The Mondo Spider also had it's first pairing with the solar panels to charge up between walks up and down the street.

The public's response to both the solar panels were better than we ever expected. People were pleased to see solar panels, many for the first time, powering part of the festival. They also had many questions about the quiet electric Mondo Spider. They kept asking, "whats powering it?" "how does it work?" "are those batteries?" and other general sentiments of amazement.

All and all it was great to get out in the sunshine and to be a part of such a positive expierence. Thanks to everyone who dropped by. Don't forget to come join us for Power the VAG this Sunday. It's going to be a fantastic time.

eatART Power the VAG
on June 27th, 2010

On June 27th 2010 from 10AM – 7PM eatART will hold its Second Annual Energy Awareness Art Party in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. The event will include a pedal powered sound system, giant zero emissions kinetic sculptures, and an unforgettable outdoor dance party featuring Vancouver electro-pop duo Love and Electric. Power the VAG will be run exclusively on solar and pedal power.

The pedal power will be generated by nine teams of four "watt-riders" who will literally keep the party going throughout the nine-hour event: the riders pedal with their back wheels resting on a spinning mini generator that is connected to the sound system. The riders will collect “energy pledges” that coincide with the amount of “watts raised,” with all proceeds going to the eatART Foundation. In tandem with this pedal-powered energy source, an array of solar panels will be powering the tents and info booth.

Love and Electric will keep Power the VAG pumping as well as local DJ talent Warm It Up Chris, Matthew Johnson, and many more.

Mondo Spider Radar app for Android
Main Page of the Mondo Spider Radar app

On May 15, 2010, the Mondo Spider Radar app for Android was released to the world by the eatART Foundation. The main function of this app is to track the eight-legged, walking kinetic sculpture known as The Mondo Spider in her travels throughout the USA and Canada. From Gadgetoff in New York City to the Burning Man Project in Black Rock City, you never know where the Spider and her team will show up next; now you can hone in on her exact location with ease.

Main Page of the Mondo Spider Radar app

The Mondo Spider Radar app team was assembled when the Vancouver art laboratory, eatART, posted a call out for programmers through Twitter. The response was overwhelming, and resulted in a truly global collaboration of individuals:
Matthias Wieland (Germany) - Lead Programmer
Aoi Nakanisi (Japan) - Lead Client Programmer
Prithiraj Sengupta (India) - Technical Manager
Omri Baumer (Israel) - Programmer
Sumit Asok (India) - Programmer
Wibke Kreft (Canada) - Graphic Designer
Ben Cooper (Canada) – Project Manager
The team communicated through a combination of email, chat, and Skype to finalize and release the app in time for the Mondo Spider’s attendance at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco on May 19/20.

Aside from helping to find the Spider’s whereabouts, the app feeds current Tweets from The Mondo Spider’s Twitter page, and provides information about the eatART Foundation and the app’s developers. Plus, it looks cool.

The Mondo Spider, a fully realized steel spider weighing over 1,600 pounds and driven by a single operator, has been shocking and inspiring audiences since it was first unveiled at Burning Man in 2006. “I’ve seen people literally drop to their knees and start praying” says co-creator Ryan Johnston. The kinetic art piece was recently converted to electric power, making it the world’s first zero emissions walking vehicle.

To download the Mondo Spider Radar app, go to App Brain. If you prefer to follow The Mondo Spider through more traditional channels, go to www.mondospider.com or check out The Mondo Spider Blog.

eatART at GreenStream

eatART was invited to present at GreenStream 2010, on February 11th.

The event was held at Light House Sustainable Building Centre and brought together some of the city’s most innovative business professionals and sustainability advocates, and enjoyed fantastic public attendance.

“Beginning with Vancouver, we’re working to bring together the world’s green community—activists, business owners, non-profit organizations and government,” says Danielle Bédard, organiser of GreenStream. “Together, we can learn from each other by becoming aware of the impact of our lifestyles and by choosing healthy living so that we can meet our needs without compromising those of our planet or generations to come.”

Light House Sustainable Building Centre is the first interactive centre of its kind in Canada. Light House is a "one-stop-shop" for innovation and is dedicated to advancing sustainable, residential and commercial building. The centre is Vancouver’s premiere resource on the latest developments in sustainable building for homeowners, building industry professionals and government officials.

eatART at Vancouver Art Gallery

Sunday, June 7th, eatART Powers the Vancouver Art Gallery! We are incredibly excited to be back at the VAG . We are partnering with Pedal Power, Our Community Bicycles, who have lent us the use of their pedal-powered sound system.

The goal of the even is to raise money for eatART, and we are doing this by having what we've dubbed "watt-riders" solicit sponsorship dollars. These riders will be
pedaling bicycles to generate electricity on OCB's pedal powered sound system. We are asking our watt-riders to ask for donations per watt-hour they generate.
